Wow. The search is over. After many failed attempts, I have finally succeeded in finding the mouse of my dreams!
I purchased this Microsoft Arc mouse in eggplant purple. What a neat color! The color pretty much matches the image presented on Amazon, at least on my computer monitors. The scroll wheel, the word "Microsoft", and the sides and bottom of the mouse are a lighter shade of purple. It feels well-made and sturdy. This mouse has a tiny little footprint. I love this new idea, that the entire mouse surface does not need to rest on your desk. Only two points on the mouse touch your desk - the rest is raised up in the normal mouse curve. This seems to make the mouse much more responsive and easy to use than others. You don't have to keep lifting it up to get the curser to move where you want it to. It also makes it so that I can use it without a mouse pad, which is a definite plus. I can now use the entire available surface of my desk, instead of constantly moving off the edge of a mouse pad. It hasn't seemed to cause any scratches either.
The mouse is just as wide and only about a 1/2" shorter in length than the latest standard optical mice. If you intend on using it with your laptop and you only have limited mouse space on your laptop desk, you might want to stick with one of the mini mice. I was concerned from the picture that the Arc would be too high and uncomfortable, but for me that is not the case. The arch looks more severe in the pictures than it actually is. I find it very comfortable, with easy comfortable access to the scroll wheel.
Yet another plus is the tiny usb adapter. It's about the size of my thumbnail, so I don't worry about it breaking off when I'm using my netbook on my lap. Some people even leave the dongle in when they put their laptop away, but I don't feel comfortable doing that. The dongle sits magnetically on the bottom of the mouse for storage. The smaller end of the mouse folds into itself, covering the dongle and ensuring that it doesn't get lost during transport. And it even comes with a faux suede pouch so I just fold up the mouse, put it in the pouch, and throw it in my laptop bag with no worries.
It uses two AAA batteries. Battery life seems normal to me. I have only found one negative aspect to this mouse. It has one extra button on the right-handed thumb side. The placement of this button is less than ideal, actually sitting slightly further forward than the scroll wheel. If I used this button I think it would be very frustrating, because it's pretty far from my thumb and thus loses any convenience factor. However, I have tried a few mice that were highly rated here on Amazon, one of which has extra buttons on both sides, and I often find myself accidentally pushing those buttons when I'm clicking and dragging the mouse. So maybe there's a reason the button isn't so easily reached.
And now I'm off to buy two more... all I need to do is figure out what colors!
